Moral Dilemma

I needed a folding chair & had a coupon for 25% off at a local office supply store, so off I went.

I get to the store, see the chair on display but not on the shelf.  A CSR comes over to help.  He locates the chair, in a box, behind some other items.  He carries to box to the check out for me.  He even waits & carries the box to my car.

I get home & in my attempt to remove the box from the trunk, the contents slipped out.  I never realized the box was open, since I never laid hands on it.  Much to my surprise, there were two (2) chairs on the box.  I flipped it over & realized the box originally held four (4) chairs.  I've never worked retail, but I'm guessing ole boy was supposed to pull a chair from the box since a SKU was on the chairs and not give me the entire (I'm thinking inventory) box.  Oh well.  Lucky me...2 for 1 right?  Well maybe not.

In a casual convo with a friend, I mentioned my accidental luck & he asked, "Are you gonna take the extra one back?"  *insert Silky's patented record scratch here*  My reply was, "Hell naw!  It's not like I stole it.  I never laid hands on it.  I'm a good customer so I see it as a tiny reward for the hundreds of dollars I've spent in that place."  He replied with,"It's dishonest & you need to take it back.  You might cost that young man his job."  Again, I've never worked retail so I'on really know.

So here I sit, with my 2 for 1 folding chairs.  On one hand, wondering if my keeping this $21 (after discount) chair could really cost the CSR his job.    On the other, remembering my grandpa telling me to, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth."

  1. I'm confused... was the box SUPPOSED to have FOUR chairs in it, or was the price you paid supposed to be for one chair. You may actually have a right to raise some hell.. but at the same time you wouldn't want to draw unnecessary attention to yourself, or said CSR. And how are they going to know it was HIM that pulled down the box to present to a customer for sale.

Chalk this one up in the Tie column and keep it movin, says me...

  2. If the box was supposed to have 4 chairs then you should go back to the store and get the remaining chairs. But if it was only supposed to be one......then I wouldn't say anything. It's not your fault the guy nor the cashier didn't check everything correctly.

  3. I only wanted 1. I got 2 for the price of 1.

The original packing is for 4 chairs, but the box (which appears to be for shipping purposes only) shouldn't have been sold as such {I'm guessing}, unless of course someone wanted 4.

Had he taken the time to look, he would've known 2 had already been removed and that the box wasn't secure.

  4. After I do the happy dance, and tell you my true feelings, (keep the chair, keep the chair) I will play devil's advocate and say bring it back. Flip the situation and say that you only got two and were supposed to have 4. It would be nice to believe that they would believe you and give you the two you were shorted. Sometimes the feeling of bringing it back and the people praising you for being so honest will be better than the 20 dollar chair

~Signed someone who has returned something I got at one Walmart on clearance for 10 dollars at another for full price 75. (shhh don't tell anyone :))

In that case, chalk it up in the L column and buy some poor folks some groceries.

  6. You know, everytime that chair "accidentally" collapses while someone is sitting in it it's gonna be because it was not purchased. WATCH!!! A whole bunch of stuff is gonna happen to folk who sit in (insert horror movie music....duhh duhh duhhhh) "THE CHAIR."

  10. HILARIOUS! Truth of the matter is, you should take it back. I am sure he gave you two by accident, and the cashier overlooked it thinking you had just one. It was error on their part, however, not intentional. YOU on the other hand know that you only suppose to have one chair because THAT'S ALL YOU PAID FOR. So, because you KNOWINGLY have something you aren't suppose to, that makes you a THIEF.

I use to look at things like that as a blessing, until my bubble was burst one day in Bible Study. God wouldn't bless you by stealing from another. Whether that be another person or another store. So extra change, or in your case EXTRA CHAIR, or even when a server doesn't charge you for that desert or drink, it is STEALING.

Just food for thought. Let your concious be your guide. *Tootles!*

  11. I really want to give the "PC" answer but----that boy isn't gonna lose his job over ONE CHAIR. Just put the extra chair at the Thanksgiving table for me. I'm on my way!

  12. Dang Monni. I think I'd take it back since the guilt trip was laid on me. My initial instinct would be to keep it, of course. You never know, you may try to take it back and they TELL you to keep it! :-)

  13. Ok, I need y'all to stop playin about somethin happening to the person sitting IN the chair. Monni already done risked a personal injury suit due to a FAULTY CHAIR!! LOL

  14. I've worked in retail and by the time they do inventory, that employee will be working somewhere else! AND, I can't think of any way they could link a missing chair back to your sale. Impossible!

When I get something free accidentally, I count it as a blessing. I had it coming to me! =)

  15. UPDATE: Thanks to Shancole (wench!) I called the store & asked for the manager. He came to phone. {I think he was a brother.} I told him what happened & that I didn't want the young man who helped me to get into trouble.

He asked for a # from my receipt & a few moments later replied, "Don't worry Ms. B. for such a small item, by time we figured it out it would no longer matter. Think of it as an early Christmas gift." He thanked me for calling in & wished me happy holidays.

Now I can sleep tonight, the chair won't be cursed & I won't burn in hell for it.

    Whew!

  16. LOL You all are a mess, but I would have said to take it back. I work retail and people don't realize that those small missing items add up to MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF SHRINK for the store which will in turn lead to high prices for the consumers.
