These painful red or white bumps on the tongue are called transient lingual papillitis in M.D.-speak. (They're called lie bumps in the South because of an old tale that telling a whopper would bring one on.) The true culprit: sharp or crusty foods that cause teeth to scrape the tongue's papillae, or taste buds. Irritation also occurs from over-consumption of acidic edibles such as tomatoes and orange juice. The papillae will heal on their own in a few days, but you can ease the pain with OTC protective gels such as Orabase or Zilactin-B.
....and here I am, 30+ years later after my mama & granny told me the "lie bump" tale, trying to figure out what I lied about & when. I guess my daily intake of orange-pineapple juice to avoid colds & flu backfired on me.

ReplyDeleteI was told they are lie bumps, too. Amazingly, whenever I would get one, I knew EXACTLY which lie I told! HA!
First of all you look just as beautiful in that picture as in any other I've ever seen... and my folks used to get me on that lie bump thang too, aint that a BITCH?
ReplyDeletelol... funny thing about a lie is... you cant keep up with it... So when I got the lies told to me about having a lie bump.. I had to try and figure out what the hell I lied about... But you know what... Im still gone pass the lie on down to my nieces and nephews.. its seems to get them everytime and make em think..lol So I wont let the cat out the bag. I'll let them figure it out for themselves...lol The lie continues...

ReplyDeleteMy Mama told me the same thing about lie bumps. I just stopped telling them I had one. I lied so much, I didn't want to blow my cover.
Yeah, that was me last week...DESPARATELY trying to figure out what the heck I lied about, why I lied about it (cuz generally there's no real reason to tell any kind of faux pas) and when I lied about it cuz the bump just seemed to materialize. Now, I'm trying to remember when I've had much acidic food last week....I think it was just a plain ol' lie bump, cuz I don't remember eating anything (or drinking) that woulda caused it. LOL
