Top 10 Home Improvement Projects

I drafted this blog this summer & due to my recent acquisition of "Boyfriend -Version 2008", I had to make some updates.

I've been in my house for 6 years and 4 months.  Of course my house came with nothing but the best & cheapest items/products money could buy.  Off-white walls, beige carpet & the cheapest lighting fixtures Home Depot offers, throughout.

When I moved in I had to focus on the important missing items - like appliances not supplied by the builder (i.e., w/d & fridge) and furniture I needed/wanted.

As of now, I don't need for anything, but my wants are forever building.

Here are the top 10 things I want/need to do around the ranch:

  1. Repair back fence/gate.  I live near the corner & a lot of folks tend to use my parking pad as a u-turn ramp.  Some jackass hit my fence once & then I hit it and made it worse.

  2. Fix the crack in my foundation where the water seeps in.  I love the rain, but I don't want it in my house.

  3. Get new carpet throughout.  I 1st considered professionally cleaning what I have, but I've never liked it anyway. (My *ahem* boyfriend cleaned the entire 1st floor & the stairs this weekend & believe me when I say, that was no easy task.)

  4. Install shelving in the family/guest/music/TV/computer room. Yes, it multi-functional! *lol*

  5. Add hardware to the kitchen & bath cabinets (I bought the stuff 2 years ago. *smh*) (Thanks to my boyfriend, this has been done.)

  6. Install a digital thermostat. (Yep!  Boyfriend has taken care of it.)

  7. Paint the entire interior (except the living room (already done) and basement (unfinished). (The 1st floor is done, thanks to boyfriend again.)

  8. Switch out & upgrade the lighting on the 1st floor and landing.  (You guessed it, boyfriend has completed this as well.)

  9. Fix the cracked concrete at the bottom of the front steps.

  10. Install nice, laminate (hardwood ain't even necessary in my 'hood) flooring in the kitchen, faux foyer & possibly the bathrooms. (Boyfriend promised to do this also.  I think he's trying to get some serious browning points.)

Do you have any wanted, lingering or undone home improvement projects?

  1. Girlllll, I have an entire list of ish to do to my condo. And I'm in a smaller abode than you!

Tear up carpet and replace with hardwood floors in living room and halls. Replace carpets in bedrooms.

Buy new stove, remove wallpaper in kitchen and paint. Stain cabinets.

    Replace all windows.

    Install digital thermometer.

Fix the gas fireplace electric switch.

    Paint bedrooms.

Install new lighting in bathroom and mirrors.

So far, I've installed ceiling lighting in all the bedrooms and living room. Replaced old refrigerator & dishwasher. Stained the deck. Uprooted that ugly ass bush in front of the condo and planted hostas. Added hotel shower rods in bathrooms. Added cabinet in my bathroom.

So much more work to do.

Been in the condo for 3 yrs and 6 months.

  4. My outside needs a lot of work too & I don't have a green-thumb. I'll tackle that if boyfriend is around come springtime.

  5. I got this Honeywell programmable one from the Home Depot clearance rack. I watched him install it & it didn't seem to difficult, but I wouldn't mess with it.

  6. I hired some Hispanic day workers. Girl they power-washed the siding, chopped up and dug up that ugly ass bush, power-washed the deck and trimmed a hedge.

3 hours worth of work for $60.

  7. I don't have a green thumb either. But hostas are hardy plants with a pretty little bloom. And they require very little work. When I forget to water them (often) they droop. Throw some water on them and they perk up within an hour.

  10. A girlfriend of mine hired the guys that live a few doors down from her to paint her morning room... He only charged her a third of the lowest quotation she received, they were on time, and in and out (and the room looks great)

  13. Sounds like things are coming together slowly but surely. That's great!

I don't have a home of my own right now but where i'm at i am slowly coming along with some things. I have started with small kitchen appliances and just got a new blender the other day (black n decker love it). I want to paint the bathrooms and put up some border or crown molding in the computer room but the ceilings seem to low for it. I don't want to do too much here because i want my own place.

  18. Okay my children's room has horrific paneling, which needs to be taken down or painted, but I cannot pick a color. And I want a porch of the back really really really really bad. And my front porch (which is ginormous, 40 x 9 and all windows needs blinds hung up, because I took down the gross ones when I moved in. And I would like different flooring in the kitchen, which is in good condition, I just dont like it.

    :)
