Drunken Fish - Central West End

http://www.drunken-fish.com/
My sushi eating co-workers forced me to go to this place...kicking & screaming! *lol* I don't do raw fish, seaweed or anything remotely related, but I went anyway because there are several other nearby spots I could've gone to alone, if necessary.

Long story short, I didn't try sushi, but I did have the Japanese Teriyaki Chicken Wings - Yumm!

  1. I had to EASE my way into Sushi. I tried ALL of their cooked pieces and rolls. Not so bad. Got my tongue accustomed to the pickled ginger and wasabi. After a while, I knew which raw pieces/rolls I liked and didn't like. I can now do the raw pink tuna, but not the raw salmon or mackeral (hell, I can't stand mackeral COOKED!)

It's definitely an acquired taste and there's only like 1 or 2 sushi places I'm willing to eat from. A bad piece of fish can kill you (or make you feel like you WANNA die!) LOL!!!

My favorites are the pieces with steamed shrimp and the soft-shell crab roll. Notice both of those are COOKED items! :-)

  3. Unlike Lusindah I feel into the sushi (sashimi style) hard and head first. I love me some spicy salmon rolls, soft shelled crab rolls, spicy tuna and salmon with roe, and yellow tail with wasabi and eel.

I tried to get my family into it but they aren't going for that raw stuff so they just take to the California and Philly rolls ( you know avocado, cucumbers, cream cheese stuff).

  4. I get these "Surimi Rolls" (I think that's what they are called) from Sam's Club. I don't even know what kinds of fish is in it, but there are no veggies or creams. I unroll it to remove the seaweed and roll it back up. *lol* I'm good with the cooked center, rice, sesame seeds & soy sauce.

  7. I tried sushi once or maybe twice (i think).... but I dont like it... I know somehow the raw fish must be safe since so many ppl eat it... But I just got a thing about things not being cooked...

  8. For the MOST part sushi is safe. But you have to be careful where you get it. I wouldn't buy it in some marketplaces. There is a sushi place in Union Station in DC that I don't go anywhere NEAR! Never heard of a problem there, but it just seems, *ugh, no* to me.

There is only really one place in MD where I get sushi, Sushi King in Columbia...a really nice restaurant that has been in business for well over a decade. They have a stellar reputation and incredibly good food, to include a whole menu chock full of non-sushi items. I trust them.

  9. I'm not big on sushi either and everytime I tell a sushi lover that they always say...not all sushi is raw. Ok..Ok..I get it! But I'm still not running to the next restaurant to have some!
