Ripped from the Headlines (insert the L&O doink-doink sound)

Do you think $1,000,000 + Lottery Winners should be required to quit their jobs in order to make room for someone who really needs the gig?

The floor is open.

  1. Nope, if they still wanna work then they should work. Hell, with the economy the way it is now $1,000,000 would probably only last 2 weeks lol

  2. I dunno...if the winnings are enough to live comfortably by, then maybe.

  3. That's Socialism at it's finest. To each according to their need, from each according to their ability. Sounds nice, but it barely worked in the Soviet Union, we know it won't work here.

Also, winning $1M is actually not that much money, not after taxes. More than most of us can fathom, but in reality, most millionaires (in the low millions) still need to work. Especially with Uncle Sam wanting dang near 33% of any unsheltered funds annually. Once those funds are sheltered, you are only living off interest (which is also taxable).

Capitalism isn't a bed of roses and much about it seems patently unfair, but Socialism is far worse at the end of the day. In my opinion anyway.

Now I cannot imagine someone winning, let's say, $50M or more even WANTING to work (at least not at a "job-job"). I can see them starting their own business in an area that has always interested them or starting a non-profit foundation or something like that.

  4. Maybe not necessarily quit.. but that all depends on the type of job.. in my opinion... But at the very least I would expect that they should give a portion of their winnings to help the betterment of some other people... Now I know most folks will say I won this money and its mine... But a $5 quick pick ticket didnt gurantee you the right to 1million dollars... Its great that you won but go ahead and help someone else out...

If I won today I would probably put in my 2 weeks notice or maybe a lil longer.. I wouldnt just up and walk away... because my employer has been more than generous to me in some areas... So again, it all depends on the job and your need to be free.. Granted if you won and no longer worked.. there would still be a major job shortage....

  7. Good question but no, because 8 times out of 10 they will still need their job at some point after they fooolishly spend all of that $600,000 (by the time Uncle Same gets his cut if not less than that) on b.s. Now if they are financially savvy and will parlay their winnings into sound investments and other ventures, that will prove profitable, then I think they should quit but not be forced or required to.

  8. Man... $5 million doesn't go nearly as far as you'd like think. if I won $5 million, I'd invest some to be sure, but I'd have to keep my job.

  9. Good point.

I heard this on the radio about a NYC doorman, but I didn't catch the actual amount which is why I went with $1 million.

  13. Good question. I don't think anyone should be forced out of their job if they win the lotto. I have seen a special on lotto taboo and what some people go through not spending the money wisely and end up broke and penny-less. When people get that kind of money they don't know how to act and it's just outrageous how many folks come out of the bushes when you have won anything let alone in the millions.

  14. Hell, most actors make more than a million dollars a movie, they don't stop working (granted them working is what gave them the millions but you get the idea lol)

  15. I saw this on the news yesterday and was thinking of the SAME question Ms. Mo. My answer conflicted...

On ONE hand I say no... if they still have the WILL and ABILITY to work then they should be able to.
REGARDLESS of how much MONEY they make, some people actually ENJOY their jobs!!! For some it gives them a sense of PURPOSE!!! These same people could give some money to a charity, do more community service, etc. but still want to make an honest living. Who am "I" to say they shouldn't be able to do so?

On the OTHER hand, though I say yes because there are MANY people out there who DON'T have enough money to live off of comfortably and HAVE to work so they should move out of the way so that they can do so.

Now here's my MEDIUM for both of my cases: if it's the case of someone loving their job and not wanting to stop doing what they do, why not take all or some of that money and put it into a SELF OWNED BUSINESS, producing MORE JOBS for those who NEED it (and still being able to do what you love in return)? Times are hard and some people (regardless of whether or not they have MILLIONS... RIGHT NOW) may not want to take that risk and I understand that as well.

  17. Not if I worked hard there and enjoyed it. Especially when you get your payment after IRS gets their share. So, just because I now have a better savings then I did before, that does not necessarily mean I should quit my job. I was just thinking about this in general lately. I would of course pay off my bills and get a comfortable place to live. I would give to my church, help my mom, and give to help others. However, I will still work. I just now won't be living paycheck to paycheck.

  18. Man shyeed. Give me 5 million after taxes...Im done wakin up til i want to!!! you need to stop talkin crazy. If you make 200 grand a year (pre tax) right now, its gonna take you 10 years to make 2 milly. So double that and in 20 years you got 4 milly. So livin at ya current level 4 mil would last 20 years. But we all know we aint makin 200 stacks, so stop frontin folks!!! 5 million would definitely bring early retirement...lol

  19. I would keep my job as something to do.. I don 't think I would quit my job. I want to pay off all my debuts, buy a house, invest, save, and make sure my immediate family is taken care of. I 'll be able to take care of my son's and my own college tutiton. I want to be comfortable.

  21. The question was should people be REQUIRED to retire. Not if they COULD.
