Cash only.
Debit only.
A combination of both.
Girl, please. You have to have money to have this issue.
I am a staunch supporter of anything that will make my life & job a little easier. {Folks who don't use direct deposit & always asking for their checks early make my ass tired, but that's for another day.}
Like many people I use my Visa debit card, regularly. One of my connects has a recent blog regarding debit card use for rental cars. I personally never do this. I'd rather use my credit card.
One commenter stated that she doesn't use a debit card - cash or AmEx (when plastic is necessary).
These days, I rarely have more than $20-$40 cash on me & when I do need it, I'll run to an ATM or inside a store, make a purchase & use the cash back feature.
I'd much rather lose the debit card than my hard earned cash. There's a reason I feel this way. I recently wrote about my own snafu when it came to cash but I was lucky to have it replaced.
Since the whole debit card thing started that's what I use. I hardly walk around with cash anymore. One exception when I play the lottery!! Which is not often. LOL But I will put my singles aside and go into the stash to play the lottery. Aside of that debit, debit, debit!!!
ReplyDeleteI like to have both. Bank systems DO crash from time to time (I use a credit union, and with mind, there have been times when their electronic system has gone down...and I'm left standing at th eregister looking dumb, even though I KNOW there is $ in the account *lol*)
ReplyDeleteI like to have cash on hand for incidentals, plus I keep a little better track of my money that way...
I use my debit card like an appendage. I may have $6 at the bottom of my purse. I work at the bank and don't EVER have cash on me. Like you I'd rather report my card stolen than lose my cash. My purse was stolen once...on payday. I know they were mad because I had not one bill in there and I coded my cards lost before I called the police.
ReplyDeleteDirect Deposit is one of the greatest service ever... I remember the days of my bitch ass payroll chick holding checks til 4:45 pm and we got off work at 5... This back when we didnt have it and I had to run it to the bank...And because then winch would wait til the end of the day, I already had to wait 2 days for it to clear, but now I have to wait 3... Dammit, if I ever hate anyone in life its her... But now that they've FINALLY gotten our payroll to go Direct Depost, all of 5 years ago,,, smh so damn slow in the game... But now I dont have to deal with her....
ReplyDeleteBut back to what you were saying... Yes, I keep my debit card handy... and honestly I didnt really start carrying a purse, regularly, til a few weeks ago... (LMAO, DONT SAY SHIT)... But I always had my lil wallet with my cash and cards in it and in my pocket... But I was taking the bus to work one day a few weeks ago and I took my wallet out to get my bus card and the bus was crowded and I held it in my hand until I got to my seat and when I sat down, I slid my bus card back in and reached down on the side of me to put it in my pocket... But it didnt go in my pocket... It quietly fell on the seat... So I get off the bus and stop at 7/11 to get my coffee and NO WALLET... wtf? Im freaking out now, cuz I had my drivers license, ID card, my credit cards and debit card, my social security card and $220 cash... It had only been about 5 minutes since I got off the bus and I was freaking out and called my sis and she said call the bus CTA... I did and they dispatched the bus and had them stop the bus... The bus had moved on about 6 or 7 blocks... too much for me to walk or run right now.. So I took a cab... OMG... I was freaking out... I finally get to the bus and people are looking at me like why am I stopping the bus... But I got to the seat I was sitting in and it was still there... THANK YOU JESUS... I look in it and everything was still there...THANK YOU JESUS AGAIN... But the thing is, had I not stopped at 7/11 I would not have noticed til late in the day and my wallet would have been in someone elses hands and spending my cash... And I dont normally carry that much at a time... No more than 50 usually. But I had stopped that morning to get money to pay my lil chicka's tuition, it was too late to send a check and I was supposed to have paid it the week before...
So now I carry a purse, like a big girl should and I keeps the cash funds in my wallet low... Besides, for me its safer to keep it in the bank, cuz that shit burns a big ass hole in my pocket and I end up buying crazy shit when I dont even need it...
I'm lucky if I have $2 in cash on me at any given time... I am the QUEEN of the Debit card... if I have too much cash it slips away like nothing... when I can log onto my online banking and SEE where all the money went it makes sense... hell I'm trying to figure how $10 disappeared the other night...
ReplyDeletelol... Where you drinking...?
ReplyDeleteLet's just say that TGR's position on Alcohol goes like this:
ReplyDelete"We aint BEEN drinkin, we STILL drinkin"
lol I like that... I might not be able to hang with yall... Hell, my 3 lil coolers and a Corona last night messed me up... But im good now... I dont even think I could be called a social drinker... One drink and Im pretty much done... lol
ReplyDeleteMan.. if you check the recipe I just posted you might wonder how I managed to hang onto ANYTHING...
ReplyDeletei need to step away from the debit card..lol
ReplyDeleteI have gotten to the point where I don't even carry cash. ITs reallly sad because sometimes I need to make small purchases and have to end up using my debit card. Just today I spent $2.17 at KFC and had to use debit..now thats a damn shame!
BUT there have been several ppl I know who have had their debit card used fraudently after using it in a store. So I am trying to stop using mine so much and carry cash.
ReplyDeleteI don't feel comfortable walking around with a bunch of cash anymore. My debit card has replaced cash. The most I will have on me is $50 cash at any given time. And that's rarely.
ReplyDeleteOne of my accounts is with Wachovia. They recently started offering a savings account where $1 automatically deposits for every debit/credit card transaction you make. THIS WAS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY!! I used to HAVE to have cash on me, if only $10, just in case. But now, I'm more encouraged to use my Debit card. So right now, I have about $20 as the house stash and nothing in the purse. It will be debit from here on out as much as possible. I'm going to really try and forget about that savings account. They give you 5% quarterly on your balance then another 5% at the end of the year.
ReplyDeleteIs this a courtesy deposit from the bank? And if so, every time you make a card transaction?... WoW,,,thats a lot... May have to seriously consider switching... Do you know how much I could rack up in a month... That sounds like a really good deal,,, to good actually... Banks dont like giving money...
ReplyDeleteOr am I way off from what you were saying...?
Girl, hell naw! LMAO C'mon now...they ain't THAT nice.
ReplyDeleteIt's $1 from my checking that auto deposits. I can't go and just make a deposit, it all has to be automatic. So if I have auto bill pay, or any other auto paying transaction from my checking account, it will deposit $1 from the checking into the savings. Still my money...lol
But the 5% they add onto the balance is theirs.
If you could have only seen my excitment when I read that... lmao... I think I read it too fast and just ran with it... Was gonna get my ass up and close my Chase and move to Wach... today.. lmao
ReplyDeleteIt pays to take your time and read carefully...lol
Lord! Don't do that! LOL
ReplyDeleteI opened a Wachovia account almost a year ago just to feel them out. My most used account was with a local bank that is only based in KC so when I'd travel to STL or elsewhere, I had no access to a branch. Since it was small, no weekend customer service was available or anything else. So I needed a bigger institution w/better access for servicing. There were no Wachovia branches here so I opened it online to see how it would be. NOW, they've opened 5 branches here (in the Kansas side) and you should have seen my excitement! LOL I walked in one day and was like "Is this an actual bank branch where I can do money transactions??" They laughed and said "Yes ma'am". I love them. As soon as you walk in there's someone that goes "Welcome to Wachovia!" Call it us KC folks being used to Gates saying "HI, MAY I HELP YOU?!"
But they have given me the best customer service so I've made them my major account holder now. I transferred the majority of my direct deposit to them now and use the other banks as my back ups. You may want to check them out :)
I was previously with Washington Mutual because I loved their NO atm fee's deal... Cuz I was always racking up atm fees at my previous bank... and I had no problem with them for the majority of the time I was with them, til last year... There kept showing deductions from my account that I had not authorized...And I would go into the bank and this happened 4 times... the first 2 they made the correction in the bank without me having to do a lot of paperwork and headache.. and my money was put right back, but she chalked it up to being a bank error... No major deal... I didnt bounce any checks or miss any payments.. The third time it was like $75 missing and the woman kept telling me it was my error... And Im like hold em up gumshoe... I haven't made any one time transactions with that amount... So I had to fill out the forms this time... and they could not come up with a reasonable answer or destination of those funds and they put it back... So now these bitches got me checking my shit every other day now and it was fine for about 2 months... This time, I go into the branch to draw money... NOTHING THERE... YIKES... I knew my direct deposit just went through plus I had already had money in there... I swear I felt light headed cuz this can not be happening right now... Basically they had my account linked by one number to someone elses,,, who must have known that, cuz when they withdrew money one time, it had both our balances combined on there... and mofo must have thought... ok, lets get it all out now... and thats exactly what he/she did... But they gave me money back in 2 days... I went in to sign the papers and took all my shit and hit the road.... I went to Chase and opened up accounts there and I've been content so far....
ReplyDeleteYeah, they gave Bank of America the big EFF Yew with that one.. I'm a BofA person and I like that little keep the change thing they do... but damn.. for as much as I use my debit card?? them dollars would stack QUICKLY... my gas would be PAID for!
ReplyDeleteHELL...NAW!!! It would have been WWW(hatever) up in that piece! AND you have the nerve to try and blame me?! I need my scrilla 2DAY! LMAO
ReplyDeleteAlright y'all...Before I give all this business to Wachovia and y'all come lookin' for me....
ReplyDeleteTHE $1 DEPOSITED IS FROM YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT THAT IS LINKED TO THIS SAVINGS ACCOUNT.
The only money Wachovia gives you is the 5% quarterly and yearly on your balance at those times.
LMAO I could make a LOTTA $25 off of you all ...but that would be false advertising and since Monni knows where I live, I don't think I'd get away w/it for too long b4 one of you was on my doorstep!
HOWEVER...if you refer a friend to Wachovia, $25 is automatically deposited into each person's account....hmmmmm
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I am too damn quiet for my own good and I can not argue to save my life, so getting upset and irate aint really gonna come out of me... So I am so thankful that my ignorant sister was with me... (lawd, I hope she never reads this)... But she has been my voice for me so many times when I couldn't... But I think her craziness helped to get it resolved faster... Actually I think the manager or whatever he was just wanted to get her out of there... my sis can be loud and annoying sometimes... Im gone have to take a class on being more assertive or maybe just upping my bitchyness... lol
ReplyDeleteYou trying to make some money off a me...? Hmmmm lol
ReplyDeleteCTFU!! My quieter friends tend to say that about me too...lol I won't usually cuss in business but I can definitely debate until the issue is resolved.
ReplyDeleteAnd uhhh, HELL YEAH I'd like to make money off y'all! LOL I quit my PT job for a while so this is a pretty effortless way to supplement income, don't cha think?? LOL
I hear ya and aint mad at cha...
ReplyDeleteBank Of America does it for debit purchases. So I save like an additional $300 every year. LOL
ReplyDeleteOkay now see that right there would of had me straight going off on those fools!!!
ReplyDeleteSomething tells me Bank Of America will change this to keep up or they will be losing a lot of customers.
ReplyDeleteSomething similar happened to me around Christmas time... $100 was magically missing from my account... it looked like a regular money transfer except it was to my former roommate... and I hadn't needed to send her any money in a year.. I called and bitched and bitched and they gave me my $100 and her account was locked for a month.. LMAO...
ReplyDeleteNever did figure out what that was about...
I was understanding you from the gate... BofA just does the change from each debit purchase instead of a whole dollar from your checking ...
ReplyDeleteIF they got past your lil dip...
ReplyDeleteLMAO...that's my homemade alarm system dangit. And it works! But once you "fall" victim, you're officially initiated :-)
ReplyDeleteWhere the hell is this host and where she been... How you gone invite somebody to a gotdamn party and then leave with all the presents and shit... MO thats rude... i mean really rude... Look, you got Silky over there sulking and Iconon over there doing something with her fingers... and TNP talking to the squirrels right now... And MizzJ down there hustling everybody for checking accounts... Sunshine... well she done ran out the building but I wont tell you why...lmao.... And I dont know much about Stardust, but she's rocking the red hair... And look at blk.. She down there with her feet in the air blowing soap bubbles....
ReplyDeleteSee, everybody bored as hell,,, no cake, no noise makers, no fruity loops, no nothing...
I aint comming to no more of your parties...
ctfu...as long as TNP don't HURT the squirrels, we're all good!
ReplyDeletelmao... what if the squirrels hurt her... lmaoooooooooo
ReplyDeleteDamn girl, you really have nothing to do huh? LOL
ReplyDelete(You done started something with the squirrels) LOL
**whispering**
ReplyDeleteI jess wan'know where DA HAYLE Red gets her crack from... Cause I want some of them rocks if she was seeing all that shit... LMAO
As long as she conducts herself accordingly, the squirrels would NEVER hurt her! They are our friends!
ReplyDeleteWhat I do....
ReplyDeleteLMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
ReplyDeleteSilky Sue... I dont know if you're ready for this yet....
ReplyDeleteIts some powerful shit...
Debit card girl checking in late on this convo. I almost never carry cash because I figure I can do less damage that way. I think I need to get out of that practice because the crumb snatchers always have something poppin up that need money for. I think I'm going to start taking out 100 each payday and just keep it handy for incidentals.
ReplyDeleteIncidentals does not include a new pair of cutie pie pumps... lol
ReplyDeleteWell that's debateable! Sometimes those shoes be calling me, dawg...LOL
ReplyDeletelmaoooooo... I bet they do... I guess if you being called you have to go...lol
ReplyDeleteI'm a cash only girl. The only type of card that I own is debit, but mine usually stays at home when I go out. As a matter of fact, I limit the amount of cash that I carry also. Can't spend what you don't have in your pocket. This strategy has worked pretty well for me. But to answer, I'm a cash girl to the bone. I get in trouble with charge cards, so I try to stay away.
ReplyDeleteSee, I like that... you know what causes you problems and you stay away from it... I need to learn that...lol
ReplyDeleteI got into trouble with charge cards which dominoed into a big problem. The solution came in the form of a little black card from Russell Simmons. The Rushcard. it takes direct deposit and has a VISA logo so it can be used everywhere.. You can only spend what you have in the account. But it still gives you the convenience of having a credit card. It is alife saver and it helps you identify your spending problems and still have access to all of your money. I remember a blog you had once about people that cash their income tax checks at a grocery store...You can direct deposit that too.
ReplyDeleteYou're the first I know to endorse this. I'll be sure to pass the word to my folks.
ReplyDeletewww.rushcard.com I was told aboutit from a friend that used it. She really liked shopping online with it becasue there was a very small chance of fraud with it. If someone got the information it was no good if there was no money there. And you can stop your card very quickly.
