Victims of Crime

When I was about 10, my mother was robbed at gunpoint on our front porch.

We had just come home from Church's Chicken & I made it inside with the box.  She was still on the porch when I heard, "Drop the damn purse!"  I yelled for her & she yelled back for me to stay inside.  She wasn't harmed & knew who the perpetrator was - a known no good ass nigga (who somebody gunned down about 10 years ago).

He got away with about $100, IDs & a checkbook.  My mother never carried a purse again.  She started carrying a cigarette wallet looking thing that held her cash, ATM card, ID and keys, tucked safely in her bosom (Lawd...I think I just dated myself).

A well known area dumpster diver found what was left of her purse a few days later & brought it to her.  All that was missing was the cash.  Even the ATM card was still in there (she never had credit cards).

That incident made me become overly aware of my surroundings then & I still am to this day.

My question for you is, have you ever been a victim of crime?    Thankfully, I have not.

  1. I have been affected by crime. It was a few years ago. I heard lots of commotion outside of my door, so I (like an idiot) went to investigate. I have never really been afraid of the "thug" element and will look them in the eye or speak my mind with them in a minute. Of course, my mom always fusses at me when I do that. But anyways, as I got to the door, apparently it was a drug deal gone bad ... as soon as I appeared there was a gun in my face. That is the WORST feeling in the world. All that I can remember thinking is that "I don't want to die." There was nothing flashing before my eyes and I barely could thing for my heartbeat racing in my throat. The whole experience made me so angry because all who decide to use guns to threaten others are spineless cowards.

I don't carry a purse either. I usually have a planner or everything is tucked away in a small clutch bag that attaches to my wrist.

  2. I've had lots of things happen to people around me, but I've never had anything major happen to me, thank the good Lord for that... Thats sad to hear what happened to your mom, but more sad that the actions of other people will cause you to alter what had once been normal to you like simply carrying a purse... But, thankful that you, nor your mom were hurt or harmed. Well, now that I think about it, the only real thing thats happened to me, is I left my car window open one summer day 2 years ago, and left my back pack in the car which was my purse at the time... When I got up the next morning,, I noticed that someone had been sitting in my car and eating... something greasy and left the paper on my seat.. and I noticed my bag was missing.. I had my wallet, with cash and cards, my social security card an other things. I also had a shit load of personal mail (bills and letters) in my bag because I stopped at th post office that morning to pick up my mail... I spent the whole day freaking out cuz I didnt know if someone stole it or if I lost it... But by the time I got home, some lady called me saying she found my bag in the park 3 blocks from my house,... I ran to the lady's house to get my bag... Everything was still intact, the money and cards were still in the wallet... and I've been monitoring my credit for the last 2 years and havent seen anything wrong.. Im guessing whoever the midnight car bandit was thought my bag was just some kiddie bookbag... But im not even sure I can call him or her stealing my bag a crime... cuz my silly ass left it on the passenger seat with the windows down... lol Maybe I was giving it away...

  3. There have been various crimes committed against me and various members of my family, but I'll relate 3: As a young adult I've had my car vandalized (they broke in and was looking for money or valuables and trashed the inside of the car). One of my younger sisters was mugged while she was 7 mos. pregnant. There had been a blizzard and she was walking home from the bus stop in the street because the snow was piled up high on the sidewalk and unshoveled and a station wagon pulled up alongside her and snatched her purse and she didn't let go at first so when they yanked it, she slipped and fell on her stomach and hit her head. I was soooooo mad when she came in the door and I saw the knot on her head and she was hysterical, then I got hysterical worrying about the safety of her and my unborn nephew. I grabbed my burner and out the door I went (I'm VERY SUPER overprotective of my siblings, even at the cost of my freedom or life) trying to find these idiots but I never did see them in the neighborhood. These were the same dregs who had previously attempted to mug one of my best friends as she came home from work but she's a heavy duty sturdy Queen like myself (she's 6'1 and at the time she was maybe about 320 lbs or so) and they tried to snatch her purse but she held on and jerked it from them damn near pulling the man out the car window with it...LOL.

  8. Haven't been the victim of a violent crime, however, last summer I accidently dropped my Coach leather wristlet outside a drugstore that contained 80 dollars cash, ATM card, ID/License, cellphone, some lip gloss, and office keys. I was only a block away when I discovered it missing...went back and it was gone! I cut off the phone right away, cancelled the ATM card, and filled out a police report. A few days later a manila envelope arrived at my home address with all the contents in it...MINUS the wristlet and cash!

  9. OK! Girl you should have seen how fast I flew out that house, now had the cops stopped me, we would have been pen pals...LOL. Thanks. Yes, my girl doesn't play. She was going through a rough patch at that time too, I was more concerned for the mugger...LOL

  10. I think "Coach Bandits" are thriving. My friend had her Coach bag stolen. It was on the front seat (1st mistake) and she hopped out to put some items in the mailbox & poof! The purse was gone.

Thankfully she got all of her stuff back too, minus the purse & wallet. Criminals with a conscience??? *shrugs*

  11. Okay WOW this is one downer of a post LOL Damn. I think I need a drink after reading about all the miserable idiots that do these crimes.

Sorry all that bad stuff happened to you guys. I have had stuff like my car keyed and some other random stuff. But never violence perpetrated by someone I did not know.

  12. I was more angry at myself than anything because I remember stooping down to tie my son's shoe and I must have laid the wallet down for a hot second (foolish me). Plus, I had found that wristlet for a bargain at the coach outlet! I must have kicked myself for a good month! I really think someone in the store might have taken it...my money was on the security dude working there. And then there's the possibility of these two "extra nice" bystanders who saw me crawling around looking for the wallet...I was seriously distressed and they took notice. They let me use their cell phone to call the bank and T-mobile to shut the phone off. It just seemed weird to me..these were a couple of trashy looking high school girls...hanging around the parking lot smoking and carrying on. And then they happened to know the security dude...

It didn't all add up until I'd gotten home...I think I was duped! But again, I fault myself mainly.

  13. See, I'm pretty sure the designer stuff gets sold to feed a habit. I'd bet my next check they don't keep it.

  14. thats why you buy the $7.99 bag from Walmart... dont nobody want that cheap bag... lol

  15. That's what I was getting ready to say. I'm from the hood and from the petty thievery that goes on constantly, that's exactly where the designer stuff goes. They sell it to folks on the street willing to buy and the cash they get goes right into the dealer's pocket.

  16. My apartment was robbed by someone I trusted when I took a vacation in 1996....my fault for being too trusting. Took my TV, VCR, and all my CD's... which is why I stopped buying them, I had a nice little collection.

and my daughter was attacked just before her 10th birthday walking to school minding her business. She was more woman at 9 y/o than most folks I know... when the bastard let her go (he left and went to school... SCHOOL!!!!!) she ran to school and told the principal what happened to her... it was almost too much to be true or real... but she never wavered from her story... the police came and she took them straight to where he'd kept her, and when they went into the house, everything that she spoke on was 100% true. That was one of the worst days of my life.
