Yes. Once or twice
Yes. More times than I care to count.
No.
One thing I've noticed over the years is, as Steve Harvey said, "Black folks & White folks take getting fired differently."
Personally, I have never (thank you Jesus) been fired from a job. I've only worked in 3 places in the last 19 years & I was laid-off once (in 1995) due to corporate buy-out.
Keep in mind, as you read along, Missouri is an "at-will" state. This means that both the employee and employer can end the employment relationship at any time and for any reason, as long as it is not discrimination under the Civil Rights Act.
I've been in my present position almost 10 years (12 years total with the company) & I think I've {almost} seen it all.
What perplexes me most is, that while there are only 12 Black people (myself & 2 directors included); 2 Hispanics & 1 Asian out of 200+ staff members, when "we" get fired it's a conspiracy. When the white folks are fired, they ask why, shed tears & they leave, most times peacefully.
Our company policy dictates that we allow an employee to collect their personal belongings while we wait. In the process, we also retrieve any company property, i.e., keys, electronics, etc.
I must state that I've never had an issue with anyone: black, white, blue or green. We on the other hand, act like we didn't see it coming. I'm talking total shock & awe. Let's be honest here. How many times do you think you have to be warned, put on probation, etc., before you get the axe?
When we tell our sides of the story, {and y'all know there's more than one-side to the story} we have a tendency to appear as total & complete victims of "the man". While I am fully aware that blatant prejudice, racism, classism, etc., exists, this is not always the case.
What about the poor work performance? What about management & clientele who refuse to work with you? What about the negative & sometimes outright rude attitude? What about the attendance & tardiness? What about you thinking they won't fire you because they are afraid of a lawsuit? What about the fully documented files kept?
These days, most employers are smart enough to have their ducks in a row before firing anyone. So before you side with KeeKee or Man-Man about allegedly getting fired over being late once or twice, ask her/him a few of the questions posed above. I can almost guarantee the reply will start something like, "See, what had happened was......"
Bottom line is - have your shit in order before you cry foul. If you really believe your being fired was unjust, there's a whole sea of sue-happy attorneys who are more than willing to listen to you. 9 times out of 10 the alleged victims will not pursue legal action simply because they already know why they are out of a job.
Any questions?
NOPE! NO QUESTIONS! And you surely told DA TRUTH....RUTH!
ReplyDeleteI will never forget the employee [a really goofy attorney] who NEVER completed her cases. And when the boss asked for a box so she could GATHER HER THINGS and then had her butt ESCORTED OUT THE DOOR, she was looking all perplexed and wondering why. Okay, she wasn't Black, she was white....but same thang. YOU KNEW IT WAS COMING.
Another chick they hired straight outta the trailer park - that heffa NEVER worked a 5-day work week and was ALWAYS calling in sick to go home and hang out with her boyfriend - now how do I know that? CAUSE THE HEFFA WOULD SAY....'KENNY WANTS ME TO COME HOME SO WE CAN...[FILL IN THE BLANK] and next thing you know, 2 hours pass and 'OOOOH UUUUUHH...I'M SICK, I GOTTA GO HOME'
She finally got the axe. I still refer to her as STEPHANIE WHO? OH THAT GIRL WHO USED TO COME TO OUR OFFICE A FEW TIMES A WEEK? I DIDN'T REALIZE SHE WORKED HERE - WHAT A CRACKHEAD
The office I was at prior to this one, had hired a black man with a drug habit that became evident after only about a month. He was TRIFE. He "lost" his company cell phone even though the boss had me monitor the bill for two months afterward and there were several calls to the city his brother lived in (I didn't disclose that information, even though I knew it on site). They had me do reverse look ups on the numbers. He stayed in the office late and worked on material for his personal business (occasionally he forgot stuff on the copier that told it all) and after he was asked to leave, we found out that he'd been loaned money by several of our elderly clients because his family was pretty well known in the community.
ReplyDeleteThey gave him the opportunity to turn in a resignation as opposed to being fired and do you know he had the absolute nerve to ask for a recommendation for his next job AND THE SCAREDY-CAT IDIOTS GAVE HIM ONE?!?!?!?
Damn Mo,,, Im trying to work today and stuff... Im trying to be a better employee... before I get the axe... But I know what you mean... Our turn-over rate in the last 10 years has been astronomical to say the least.. Some have been fired and didnt really do anything to anyone at the time... But some how we would come to work the next day and all the tires on the company vans are slashed or the front door is broken... or the worse was when a disgruntled ex-employee decided since he had been fired and made to feel like shit in front of everyone he decided to literally bring shit onto the company... crazy mofo got some extracted bodily deposits (Im assuming from himself, unless he borrowed it which is equally as nasty), but he smeared it all over both the door entrances and onto the gates which house our vehicles and left a lil bit through the mail slot... Thank you Jesus I had a cold that day and called in sick, or I would have really been sick... lol But in the cases of people being fired here,,,, my boss is very lient, so they had to have seen it coming like a freight truck with 10 high beam lights lit on them... But, I've heard the excuse that they were discriminated against because of color, work ethic, personal and religious beliefs... so on and so on... But honestly, to be fired from here you really gotta be doing some major dumbshit... Which brings me to myself... Im gone have to stop hanging with you people... yall gone get a sistah in trouble... I to, have never been fired... This is my 2 second real job, outside of high school at least...
ReplyDeleteWell, I've worked Temp Jobs since I've been outta high school. The AGENCY didn't fire me (I quit) but there were a couple places they sent me where the employers said "This ain't workin'".
ReplyDeleteI've never gotten the axe (this job I have is the first real job post college). I avoided a near miss a few years back w/my former boss. She tried to blame me for EVERYTHING that went wrong in our office. Do you know how demoralizing that is when you are part of a two-person department? My job is not one where we have measurable goals...our success is subjective. So when my former boss put me in disciplinary meetings with H.R., I presented my work, oultining all my responsibilities, showing my writing samples and my press releases, etc. The final finding was my boss was found to ineffective as a manager and a leader. She would take credit for all the good we would do and then she's trash me the minute something was found to be wrong. I hated I had to be placed on the hot seat for this to result, but hey I learned a lot in the process.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that when I got my new supervisor she was very fair with me, and she looked past the sullied events/relationship with my former boss. She dismissed the reputation that had been saddled upon me by the outgoing boss. Also it's great that my new sup supports me and makes me feel like an equal. She doesn't blame me when shit goes wrong, she takes responsibility for the entire dept. which is cool!
On the flipside, I heard there was a chic here who got fired and her mom came up here and threatened to beat up the dept head. They had to call po-po on her and to this day there's an order of protection for the mom and her to stay away from the bldg. LOL & SMH...
Can somebody say ghetto... lol
ReplyDeleteWell...
ReplyDelete*snicker*
(you told the slam truth)
I don't even have to tell you they were black right? smmfgdh....*sigh*
ReplyDeleteThank God I have never been fired
ReplyDeleteBut at my last job they would bring you a box to put your stuff in and security would escort you the LONG WAY out of the bldg so EVERYONE got a chance to see you. To me that was so wrong and humiliating.
Everybody I saw get fired and take the long walk looked sad black or white.
I'll sign the attendance sheet to this blog, HOWEVER I am keeping my arse outta the topic.:) I can contribute this.
ReplyDeleteMy ex sister in law, who is one of my closest friends is a teacher. She just started a new job in whole new field. She is now teaching women who are receiving state benefits work ethics, resume stuff, computer skills etc. She has only worked there for about 3 weeks and has called me with some fantastic reasons that the women have been unable to attend. She already called me today and told me that she had a girl leave a message at 7 this morning saying she wouldn't be in because she had a doctors appointment, and one yesterday not coming in cause she was in a car accident. Last week one had a sick baby, one had no transportation and one had no transportation to bring the child to daycare. We just laugh over how people are soooo clueless as to the fact that once you have to work a 40 hour work week and are not fortunate enough to be getting an income by showing up from 9-1 5 days a week, they will get a rude awakening to how easy they had it with her. And how you have to learn to handle that stuff, AND still work.
:)
wait, sorry, there are only 6 people in the class. :)
ReplyDeleteIf I wasn't from the Upper east side of the black chicago community,, I might have gotten offended by that....
ReplyDeleteLet me shut the hell up... we aint got no upper east side... or do we? lawd, I need to be working... lol
The upper east side would be the lake...do you live in Lake Michigan?...lol
ReplyDeleteI've been fired before, and just kept it moving. 1 time I wanted to quit because things were not working out, but the company insist I hang in there and stay. I ended up working for this guy that kept having collect calls come to the office, and wanted me to do all kinds of things I knew I was not supposed to be doing. I got fired when I would not help him with his shady stuff.
ReplyDeleteAnother time I was working for a publishing company, and simply put it was not a good fit. I've been laid off a few times as well.
Nope, never been fired, but dayummm I wanna quit my current company. This is my fifth store and has been an absolute nightmare from day one. NOBODY gets fired and from my company's standards from what I experienced in previous stores, half the store should be axed. Seriously. Gooooooone! One girl, who is a fulltime cashier asked the people in line if they were doing returns or purchases, for those who were in the wrong line she promptly told them in a not too nice voice: You are in the wrong line, next time *READ* the sign. Whaaaaaaaaaa? Working retail will make you wanna say some choice words, but of course you never say them. My all white management team is very afraid of the all black, non-professional, ghetto ass staff that works there. Shit on the person who tries to correct someone's behavior, particularly the ones who have been there 10 years plus. Employees in my store will tell management what they will and will not do, and many cases will flat out refuse a request from management adn I am like uhhhhhhhhhh insubordination? hellurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr????
ReplyDeleteMaybe... You wanna come over for dinner... Bring you boat and paddle... Fish will be on the menu and a tall glass of water to wash it all down... lol
ReplyDeleteSounds like I got out of retail at the right time!
ReplyDelete<--------------------------------------------- Can't wait to get my degree in December so I can get out too.
ReplyDeleteI have never been fired and I have never witnessed someone being handed a pink slip, but I have witnessed many after the fact.
ReplyDeleteI have never been fired... but there was this chick who worked with me on my current job... they fired her the first week of December... but allowed her to continue working thru Christmas...they even let her come to the faculty Christmas party.... like they were doing her some grand favor... poor thing.... she cried every day...
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention that there were at that time about 4 blacks in the WHOLE company of 100 people...
ReplyDeleteand only 2 in the front office...and then there was one...(me)
They fired one of the IT dudes here and let him continue working to a set date.... he still doesn't have a job from what i heard ... but he damn sure did it to himself.
ReplyDeleteAWESOME blog, Mo! Nine times out of 10, you deserved to be fired so I don't wanna hear it!
ReplyDeleteMy company is funny. You WIL NOT collect your personal items. While they are firing you in an office, somebody is boxing up your stuff! They will kindly escort you from the office out the door with your box!
HA!
My friend wasn't allowed to go back to her desk, they sent for her purse and her personal affects were mailed to her.
ReplyDeleteThank God I have never been fired. (I'm more the no call/no show type LOL) But I know people who have been. I worked with a guy who got fired for seemingly no reason. He was pretty much a trouble maker and a know it all. He said he was going to sue and eventually he won a suit specifying that he had disclosed to our bosses that he was HIV positive and claimed that was the reason they fired him. I don't know if that was truly the reason or they just settled to keep it out of the news though.
ReplyDeleteTHat is cold....lol
ReplyDeleteI got fired from a job for something someone else did. A co-worker had gotten hold of a few folks passwords, mine included, and proceeded to charge things to folks credit cards and take the cash out of the registers. Rather than conduct a full investigation, they just fired the whole shift. I sued and lost cuz he got my password in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI have been laid off but thankfully never fired. I know I can get complacent at times, but I can get a vibe when I am treading too close. I know twice when I was younger, I changed jobs because I thought I was close to being fired or written up. Oh to be young and foolish. LOL
ReplyDeleteNow, I am aware of people who have gotten fired for some OUTRAGEOUS stuff. I mean, they pretty much brought it on themselves, but it was the stuff they did that had me thinking "Now HOW in THE WORLD did you think you were going to get away with that??"
OOooo... they do that at my job too! They are called out, and then the next thing you know, you see the supervisor or someone cleaning our their desk.
ReplyDeleteYEP! That's how we know people are GONE!!!!!!!!! LMAOOOOOOOOOOO! They WRONG!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI got fired from my last job because I was efficient, learned quickly, didn't ask many questions, learned my job as well as others and kept to myself. This bothered a co-worker (she was afraid I was going to take her spot), she kept running back and forth to the supervisor telling her that I wasn't working (when I was). I thought the supervior had enough sense to pull me to the side and talk to me but she didn't. I regret not filing harassment charges when it was all going on. That's my only regret.
ReplyDeleteIf I was trifiling I would have said so but I honestly didn't do anything wrong at my last job.
Even tho it's a dead issue, you should still make a formal complaint to the EEOC. http://eeoc.gov/
