Unemployment Compensation

This only applies to those who work in the State of Missouri. I have no knowledge of the practices of other states.

There has always been a huge misconception in the black community about this topic. Allow me a few minutes to clue you in.

People please, do not quit your job with the hopes of chilling at the crib for a few weeks collecting unemployment! 9 times out of 10, it's not going down like that.

Unemployment compensation funds are reserved for those who involuntarily lose their job due to being laid-off or fired. The system is not designed to compensate folks who just don't feel like working anymore.

I can only speak for my agency, but we will contest any claim filed by a person who voluntarily quits their job.

Of course I don't advise anyone stay at a job where laws are being broken, one that makes you unhappy, offers less than pleasant working conditions, etc., etc. Just keep in mind, if and when you quit your only source of income, you better have a Plan B.

As always, if you have any questions, let me know.

  2. Same here in Illinois...if there are laws being broken, you can file a complaint (in Illinois) with the Department of Human Rights or EEOC

  3. I've been tryin' to tell fools this shit for SOO long. But some of them just don't get it. Others will just do stupid shit to get fired on PURPOSE once they found out. It's a sham, ain't it?

  4. Ha - depending on what you get fired for out here, you aint likely to collect a thin dime...

  5. That's the way it works here too. And with my Inc. they contest and usually win even if you are fired. So basically when you leave my company you need to be going to another job immediately.

  6. Man! One of our {an unhappy sista} employees was out on medical leave. She called & asked for my help with her resume. Then she told me she wasn't coming back, she was just gonna draw unemployment until she found a gig. I am so glad she told me because I had to school her. She honestly didn't know.

  8. @ Silk & Twin - I figured some places were like that.

I think my local people are listening to folks who quit mega-corporations (ones who don't care or take the time to contest the claims).

  9. She's a mailroom employee & one I actually consider a friend. I did help her but there's only so much I can do. I just didn't want her to be ass out & I'm the one who will complete & sign off on the contest.
