The grey hair in my head is getting outta control. I was OK with one (1) or two (2), but damn, every day I awake to what {I think} is more than my fair share. To make matters worse, some grow in grey & others are turning grey from the root. The ones that grow in grey don't even appear to belong in my head.
I want to age gracefully, but damn. I've never used permanent hair color, but I think the time has come!
Back in the day, I was the queen of the semi-permanent colors....blue/black & burgundy to be exact. My mom & granny wouldn't allow me dye my hair burgundy. They did meet me 1/2 way & allowed the semi-permanent color. You could barely see it under normal lighting , but in the sun the color was the bomb!
I'm feeling a little adventurous & want to try a new color, but I'm deathly afraid, I'll end up looking like Lucille Ball (fireball red) or Marilyn Monroe (platinum blonde) by the head & that's a no-no. Those colors are beautiful on some sisters (Starr & Silky to name a few), but won't work for me.
My natural color looks black, but is really a dark brown. I'm considering a lighter shade of brown or natural black.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I can't go too wild....I don't want corporate America, also known as the white folks who sign my off on my salary, looking at me like I've lost my ever-loving mind.
I've always gone dark and never light (unless it was a wig) so I have no clue. Sorry I'm no help.
ReplyDelete:(
When I go light, my hair breaks clean off! I am no help to you either!
ReplyDeleteI would suggest that you try a few wigs in a few different colors and then find a hairdresser to replicate the color(s) you like. (Thanks for the compliments though) ;)
ReplyDeleteDamn,,, and I thought we was about to talk alcohol... Guess I'll go back to my lil ole wine cooler..lmao .... I dont know much about hair color, and probably not the best person to ask seeing how I permed my hair last week and dyed it right after (all in the same night)..lol I didnt know you couldnt do that.. When I told my friend she must have had a cow.. I washed it out immediately and suffered no damage.. But, maybe I should sit back and check out the comments and see if i can get some pointers...lol..
ReplyDeleteI'm still shy about hair coloring. I once had a kool aid red rinse, but you could only see it in the light (lol). I am with Silkee on experimenting with color on the wig. They will make you braver. One day, I may work up to actually taking the leap. I just bought a cute 1B/33 mix wig this week and everyone was raving about it. The warm brown is a step up from my othewise very raven black hair. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI have gone lighter before. I had highlighted streaks. I would love to go a deep red personally, and I will, but right now, I'm on a budget so for color fun, I just switch up phony-ponytails. I know a lot folks like to do the black rinse. You could also try getting different colored weave and putting in your hair to creat a "streaked" look. That way you can see how different colors work with your complexion before doing something permanent. Wigs are fun too. I think I may invest in one myself. I am guilty of having long hair, but not wanting to do anything to it, yet, don't want to cut it. So I keep it moisturized and pulled up.
ReplyDeleteWe're in the same boat on this one, I've never tried coloring my hair. But I think those really dark browns are pretty and would blend with your corporate look. I would definitely use a hair stylist [color professional] particularly for the first time, they can mix colors and do the highlights better. When I get my nerve up this is what I'm going to do. When I....
ReplyDeleteWish you well on this one, it's a bit scary - I know. ☺
Of course, black is available - can't go too wrong there.
Bleach it, go platinum!
ReplyDeleteMy natural hair color is a reddish auburn. I hope I don't have none of those rust colored hairs when I get old mixed with gray. Looking like a rusty scouring pad.
If you try a few semi-permanent colors you will get an idea of what you want. I personally like the brown, red and auburn family on 'ethnic' people.
ReplyDeleteI suggest you talk to a few hair stylists first and get their opinions, as well as some family members. I've had my hair colored burgundy a number of times and would have kept it in except last time it didn't work correctly. This time I got a perm color put in, just a shade lighter than my original hair color of dark brown.
ReplyDeleteNaw dawg...I watch enough ANTM to know that's a painful process.
ReplyDeleteMy hair has been dyed since junior high school! LOL My mama didn't like the "dusty" reddish brown color (as she called it) that runs in my family. She used to have it dyed dark brown or black.
ReplyDeleteI say try a Medium Golden Brown. That's what I used this summer. It warmed to a nice auburny shade. Or my other favorite, Ash Blond if you want a little more "Umph" without the shock. It's not actually going to turn your hair "blond" but a lighter shade of brown. The "ash" keeps it from turning brassy. I need to redo my color since I have cut my hair so short. Like you, my gray hair is getting out of control. The Man (iaka work) is driving me nuts and prematurely gray.
I also think Silkee's color is fabulous. Work that platinum, Girl!
Watch out on that advice from DeShanna. I think she is trying to have you looking like you're from Birmingham.
