“A state public health official is urging Gloucester officials to take swift and decisive action, including allowing prescription birth control, to curb a spike in teen pregnancy among students at Gloucester High School, where a record 17 girls are pregnant.”
As a former teen mother, this is long overdue.
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot of hulla-balloo over this a few months ago. Many parents opposed and tried to get a court order to stop the school from handing out birth control without parental consent. They lost that battle, and when the process went into effect, only ONE teen made use of it!
ReplyDeleteGo figure!
Wow...
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to say about this hot mess. Though I don't think the school should get envolved with prescription birth control and this why. Birth control today has so many side effects health wise, especially that darn patch, the patch can be deadly. There has been a startling number of death behind the patch, due to the blood clots that can arise from using it. I think they should leave that to Planned Parenthood (if they have one) or a doctors office.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about the laws in Boston, but here in CT a child can get on birthcontrol (as long as they are 16 (I believe) without a parents permission. When I was teen that was not allowed and my birth mom was not an advocate of birth control so she was not putting you on any. Her moto was no sex before marriage because she was a virgin when she got married (let her tell it-LMBO). No I believe her because she told us when she got married at the age of 19 she didn't even know where babies came from and my dad darn sure didn't tell her. My mom grew up in deep bama (Selma) and her mom NEVER discussed sex with them, well they did but they lied, tellin them crazy mess like the Stork brought you your baby, or babies came from the cabbage patch....(*light bulb moment)--------> So that's where Cabbatch Patch Kids idea came from...Lawd, I'm a little slow...
Wait, when I was 5 I thought men with big stomachs were pregnant. I saw this many with a big stomach and I yelled to my fostor mom "That man is having a baby grandma".....LMBO!!
I mean that could have happened for a number of reasons. Maybe the batch of teen girls who would have made use of it are already pregnant. Maybe the parents of teens who would have made use of it have instilled the wrath of God/Parents into them, and they are afraid to seek it out. OR, maybe this got parents TALKING to their kids about birth control, and now the kids don't feel they need to get it behind their parents' back or without their consent.
ReplyDeleteCTFU @ you, 2 decades later! LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's ok, I was a teenager before I was told that black women did NOT breastfeed their babies chocolate milk!
ReplyDeleteThat's it right there! As someone who was warned against sex (just not in the proper way), there was little anybody could've done to stop me. If I had someone to turn to who would've had my back regardless of my decision, my son might STILL be waiting in the wings.
ReplyDeleteLusi? What?! Now that's one for history books!
ReplyDeleteIt starts at home first. Parents need to talk to their children. I know my mother didn't want to talk to me about sex. Everything I learned about sex was from my peers. I got pregnant at eighteen. My mother was mad, her eighteen year old daughter was pregnant. Its not her fault. But I do believe if she had talked to me about sex, I wouldn't came home pregnant. Sex shouldn't be this hush hush subject between parents and children. If more parents talked to their kids about sex and be totally honest about it, we would have less teen pregnancies.
ReplyDeleteToday I found porn in my eleven year old son's closet. Oh yeah, we are having the talk, Today!!!!
The rise in teen pregnancy is a huge concern, expecially when you consider the starteling number of yourth and young adults bewtween the age of 16-25 that are infected with HIV....All of this unprotected sex is not cool. These kids are playing a dangerous game HIV does not go away....They just don't get it, or they just don't believe it can happen to them.
ReplyDeleteRaising a baby when you are a baby yourslef is not easy....The first time I had sex at 15 I got pregnant. I cried for damn near 8 months no joke! I was sooooo depressed. I gained 7 pounds( yup only 7 pounds) in the 9 months I carried her. I darn near lived at the hospital, they would feed me, I had to go to the hospital 3 times a week for 4 hours per day....I lie not. Now here's the kicker they were convinced that my baby would not weigh more than 2 pounds at best because my stomach was so small. They had all types fo specialist in the delivery room. WELL, SHE WEIGHED 7 LBS AND 2 oz. She was the 7 lbs I had gained. When I think about that I say "God is awesome".... I look at my 30 year old daughter now and I say "wow"....I'm soooo proud of her.
I feel ya sis...been there done that: http://msmo72.multiply.com/journal/item/40/Boys_Porn
ReplyDeleteI was in denial until I started to show. After the initial shock & disappointment I caused my caregivers, I had AN AWESOME support team. I just made sure not to press my luck a 2nd time....at least while I was dependent upon them.
ReplyDeleteYeah, good for you mom!! He probably has had his first boner and wet dream already. Our kids are developing faster and faster. I started my cycle when I was 9 years old....Yes, 9.....And now I can't wait for it to stop....
ReplyDeleteWhen I got pregnant at 15 there was girl who, 12 years old and pregnant. Back then in CT all the pregnant girls had their own school. (well not their own school) But they went to a school for pregnant youth
Thank you. What' s so funny about it, his father doesn't want to have the talk with him. He's like what am I going to say???
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking, that's the main person who should want to talk to him.
I had my first period at 10. I thought I hurt myself on the bike.
We used to have a maternity school as well. If you were 9th grade or younger, it was mandatory. 10th & beyond, it was optional unless you were having physical difficulty.
ReplyDeleteYou have too, because you cannot be in denial, sometimes kids have sex. That's the reality of life. No we don't like it, but there is a possibility that it may happen and better to talk with him now, then to wish you had later. And if he's had his first wet dream, he can make a baby. These are the things that you MUST THINK ABOUT!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think that was the rule in CT also, but they don't have any maturnity schools here in CT any longer (well not to my knowledge).
ReplyDeleteI am going to have that talk with him. I don't want to be a grandmother before my time. Its too much going on out here. Kids in high school contracting HIV from having unprotected sex. That's crazy!! Their life is over before it truly begins. I'm going to send him out in the world with the correct knowledge
ReplyDeleteMake sure to cover all bases. Some youngsters are abstaining from vaginal intercourse but are giving head like it's right (to avoid pregnancy), certainly not knowing there are dangers associated as well.
ReplyDeleteI will cover all the bases..
ReplyDeleteTURE, TRUE, TRUE!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think the pill will help curb the pregnancy rate. Some youngsters believe having babies is cool and movies like Juno glorify it. I wasn't a teen, but I was just 20 when my son came and changed my life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with studentoflife...what about the CONDOMS???? Clearly these kids aren't using ANYTHING at all to prevent pregnancy or STDS. When it's all said and done, what would they rather be stuck with...a child or an incurable disease. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm???
