It’s Way Back Wed & you know what that means to me.
I was flipping thru my photo albums & thought I write about some of the things I loved as a child.
- The Muppet Show – If I missed an episode I just wasn’t right for the entire week!
- Praying with my Papa – Our nightly ritual was to kneel & recite the Lord’s Prayer with my grandpa every night.
- Staying up late with my Muda – She was a night owl & usually stayed up late piddling around the house or watching the late, late show. It was nights like that when she talked about the family & I learned most of the things I know today.
- Cartoons & Games with my Mom – My mom would always buy snacks & make popcorn for our cartoon nights….you remember the ones that came on primetime and during the holidays. She was also a board & card games connoisseur. She would give us loose change to play with & we always had fun.
- Helping my Muda bake – My grandma made most of her desserts from scratch & I loved to help her. We all know eating the batter left in the bowl was always a treat! None of us ever got salmonella poisoning either.
- Hoola Hoops – Didn’t all little black girls love hoola hoops? I think it’s how we perfected our “hip action”.
- Playing Dress-Up – My Muda had tons of costume jewelry, high-heeled shoes, hats, furs & wigs. I spent many a Saturday afternoon rambling thru Muda’s stuff.
- Jacks – I preferred the metal jacks with super ball. I could play jacks all day long!
- Chinese Jump Rope – With these long legs, I was pretty good.
- Bolo Bats – This had to be the cheapest, most fun thing to pass the time with. Even when I broke them from extensive use, my Papa would fix it. Man, my Papa could do everything! I miss that old dude.
- Road Trips – Man I loved them! My aunt had an RV so when that house on wheels pulled up; I knew we were about to hit the road! I can’t stand road trips now! I get too anxious & almost like a nerve-wrecking child, i.e., “Are we there yet?! Are we there yet?!” I’ll book a flight in a New York minute. 4 hours {one way} is my limit in a passenger vehicle.
- Shopping – My mother only shopped when it was necessary, but my granny…man we shopped every week! I couldn’t wait to pick up the Sunday paper after church so we could scan the circulars & plan our shopping.
I could definitely go on, but you get my drift.
What in the world is a bolo bat?
ReplyDeleteI loved riding my bike.
The ice cream truck.
Walking to the pink store.
Hanging out at the circle corner (right at the cul de sac is where folks hung out, even folks from off the block)
Watching the Bishop brothers go home and get "weapons" to come back to the circle corner to fight each other, lol.
Catching lightning bugs and taking off the "light" and wearing (bug guts) as wedding rings.
Pixie stix.
Slip n Slide
This toy I used to have, I wanna say it's called Bubble Bee, but I'm not sure. It was a bee about the size of a can of pop and it was on a rope with a ring attached. The ring slipped over your foot and you would swing it around and jump over the bee.
I think I was a big time nerd.. Probably until 12 years old I always kinda hung around the house and the family... Anyway, my thing was puzzles.. I could do a 5000 piece puzzle in 3 days... And I loved that shit... cuz after I was done I would glue them and give em away like I had made paintings... The family, like uncles and aunts took them and said they liked them... Now Im wondering what they did with them... bet they tossed them in the garbage... lol
ReplyDeleteOther than that, I read alot... played video games... and I loved eating or sucking or whatever you call it... those waxy candy things with the juice in them... I loved those suckers...
Very interested in knowing what this is...
ReplyDelete*faints at the thought of even TOUCHING a bug, let alone wearing it*

We had a "playhouse" that my dad built for us behind our pool in our backyard that was at least 10' by 10' with a peaked roof, real windows and carpeting.. I loved that place, but my dad converted it to a shed as soon as I was a teen (smart man)
Well, I stayed to myself as a child...but I used to LOVE going to church (especially for the trips), going to the movies, SKATING (Didn't go often but when I did, it was the SHIT), The Arcade (again, didn't go often cause I had damn near every game system since Nintendo. I STILL do), Saturdays morning cartoons and the music of the 90's!! DAMN!! YOU TAKIN' ME BACK!!
ReplyDeleteMelton's Pink Store was a little all pale pink family owned neighborhood candy store. We all used to walk there down the train tracks and buy $2 worth of candy. I mean a whole lunch sack full. The wax soda things you were talking about. Jolly Rancher stix, Pixie stix, Boston Baked Beans, Lemonheads, Super Bubble Bubble gum. But Jiffy cornbread would be like $1 LOL.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago they sold it and the new owners painted it green and we have the kids all kinda confused when we talk about the (green) pink store now.
How could I forget the Randall Court block parties? Our street was the bomb!
ReplyDeleteFYI--We still have a drive in. Ya'll should come down here sometime to let the kids experience it!
